According to many historians, today would mark the 566th anniversary of the beginning of Pancake Day. Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent, in 1444, a housewife in Olney, England, supposedly was frying pancakes before the Lenten fast when church bells summoned her. She was so eager to get to church, she left her house along with her frying pan and a pancake in hand.
In keeping with the tradition like we did last year, we, too, celebrated today with pancakes. We began our morning with a reading of one our family's favorite books, If You Give a Pig a Pancake. Our reading was then followed by a special treat of Pink Pig Pancakes. They came complete with strawberry slices for ears, blueberries for eyes, and even almond slices for nostrils.
To keep with our theme, this evening's dinner included more pancakes. My mom is in town and we teamed up preparing a delicious meal of steak, rice pancakes, a potato-chive pancake, and broccoli. I used this potato-chive pancake recipe and it turned out amazing.
It was fun indulging today. Hope you were able to indulge on a pancake as well today. J
well that's the cutest pancake ever. it reminds me of the poem...
i love you little
i love you big
i love you like a little pig
that's one of granddad's favorites.
we aren't cool enough to know that it was pancake day so we didn't have any pancakes on pancake day. shoot!

Hi Ashley. Lydia is learning one letter and it's sound each week, and this is Letter P week. I had planned to read If You Give a Pig a Pancake, so I decided to make your pink pig pancakes for lunch today. :) We didn't have strawberries, blueberries, or almonds so I used apple slices for ears, chocolate chips for eyes, and pecan pieces on the snout. Thanks for the fun idea!
